Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition: Book of the Dead Mod

Divinity: Original Sin is a turn based RPG made by Larian Studios.

While playing this game, I wanted to change some progression design and decided to port a mod from the original version of the game to the Enhanced Edition. For this, I used the modding tools that came with the game.

The Book of the Dead, ready to revive the souls of the fallen… for a price.

Premise

The Book of the Dead is a gameplay mod ported over from the original version of the game for the Enhanced Edition.

The original mod simply added a spell that would revive enemies when cast, allowing you to fight them again for experience. The original game only has a finite number of battles. This caused me to meta-game a lot of the encounters, always picking options that yielded more experience.

Additionally, if something was too hard, the only way to get past it was to either repeatedly try again or lower the difficulty in the settings. I preferred more of a “natural difficulty” approach akin to games like Dark Souls where, if fights are too difficult, you can upgrade weapons or level up to make the encounter easier instead.

Since I was playing the Enhanced Edition, this original mod was not compatible with this version, so I opted to port it over and add my own twist.

Book of the Dead

The Book of the Dead is an NPC I added to the player’s home base where it could be spoken with. I wrote a series of dialog options in the game’s style, allowing it to be a part of the lore.

The book holds all the names of the fallen, but would allow you to wipe these names if paid a fee based on the amount of names it currently held.

In gameplay terms, the more enemies that had to be revived, the higher the cost.
